"My mission is to give direction to
our people at ASL PAVING, and to develop good people to move
into a fourth generation of ownership at ASL. It's important
to me that the legacy of this company continues."
As President, Wade shapes the future of ASL
PAVING, giving direction to the leadership team and acting as
a knowledge base for others in the company. Wade handles the corporate
finance side of ASL PAVING, while co-owner and partner David Paslawski
takes care of the operations side of the business. Both Wade and
David are involved in long term planning and strategy for ASL
PAVING.
Wade knows ASL PAVING inside and out, having
worked at the company since 1980. At that time he started in the
accounting department at the Saskatoon office. Gradually Wade
took on more duties and in 1990 he became part of the management
team and was made an officer of the company (Secretary-Treasurer).
From 1990 to 2002 Wade gained more experience and took on even
more responsibilities at ASL.
In the fall of 2002 Wade approached the owners
of ASL PAVING with an offer to take over the company. The three
co-owners were looking to retire and knew Wade could take ASL
into the next generation. Wade needed a partner in the venture
and found David Paslawski, an engineer with an MBA who had worked
at a paving company in Alberta. In February of 2004 the deal was
completed and Wade and David became the new co-owners of ASL PAVING.
Dave Flood (a previous owner) stayed on from
2004 to 2006 as President. Wade Mitchell officially became President
on July 1st of 2006.
The transition was not without its challenges.
On August 5th of 2006, a little more than a month after Wade became
President, he suffered a bilateral brain stem stroke and was hospitalized
for seven weeks. Six months of rehabilitation followed and Wade
has recently returned to working half days at ASL PAVING. He expects
to make a full recovery.
